What is breast reduction surgery?

breast reduction in Valencia, Alcoy, Elda, Ontinyent, Villena Dr. Antolín
Oversized breasts cause neck, shoulder and back pain and discomfort during exercise.

Whilst many women desire breast augmentation to enlarge their breasts, many others seek smaller breasts.

Breast reduction in Valencia performed by Dr. Antolín is indicated in cases where breast size is causing physical discomfort, unwanted attention and self-consciousness.

Reducing breast size can result in a slender figure, the resolution of physical problems such as neck or back pain, and improved self-confidence.

Breast reduction surgery for women involves the reduction of breast volume through the removal of a portion of the mammary gland and excess skin, with subsequent remodelling, to achieve a breast of smaller dimensions, enhanced projection and better proportion in relation to the patient’s body.

In men, breast reduction surgery is termed gynecomastia.

This procedure is requested by patients of all ages, from adolescence through to women over 65 years of age.

In some cases, if the patient desires, we can use implants to increase breast volume in the upper pole, to achieve a more harmonious shape.

What they all share is not only dissatisfaction with their aesthetic appearance, but also functional problems such as back and neck pain, discomfort from bra straps, irritation and soreness in the inframammary fold, and so on.

On other occasions, it is performed as a post-bariatric reconstructive procedure in patients who have undergone massive weight loss.

A considerable amount of information must be conveyed by the patient regarding the goals to be achieved with the breast reduction procedure, and this information must be correctly interpreted by the surgeon in order to establish the most optimal surgical plan and make the most appropriate decisions. The patient must be thoroughly assessed by the surgeon and listened to with genuine interest and care. It is essential that the patient receives excellent care, is well informed, is operated on with skill, and of course, most importantly, that the patient feels genuinely delighted.

Candidates for breast reduction surgery

Candidates considering breast reduction should be in good physical health and should also have realistic expectations regarding the results of the procedure.

Often, there may be health problems directly related to breast size.

  • This mainly includes neck, shoulder and back pain, although secondary health problems are also frequently present.
  • For example, the weight of the breasts may make it difficult for you to take a deep breath, or the skin beneath the breasts and under the bra straps on the shoulders may become red and irritated.
  • Even regular exercise can be very uncomfortable for women with larger breasts.

The initial consultation

Prior to undergoing breast reduction surgery, every patient will attend a FREE initial preoperative consultation during which:

1. Dr. Antolín will obtain a detailed medical history, which will include any medical conditions affecting your breasts. The doctor will also require your comprehensive family history.
2. We will ensure you are in good physical and mental health to undergo this procedure.
3. We will take photographs of your breasts and measure them, as well as perform a clinical breast examination.
4. During this consultation, we will also determine how much breast tissue needs to be removed to achieve your desired results.
5. Dr. Antolín will provide you with instructions on how to prepare for surgery and how to plan your recovery.

It is important to be completely honest during this consultation; this includes:

  • Being completely truthful about your medical history.
  • Being entirely open about why you are seeking breast reduction. You will need to discuss any emotional concerns you have experienced.

That is, how do you feel emotionally about the size of your breasts? How do they affect you physically? What kind of physical problems have you experienced?

Type of procedure

There are numerous techniques, some more suitable for certain situations than others, but ultimately the most important factor is the technique with which Dr. Antolín feels most comfortable, has the most experience, and can achieve the best results.

The size of the breasts, whether the volume of the breasts differs, the degree of breast sagging and the position of the nipple-areola complex will also influence the choice of technique.

Procedure characteristics

During the procedure, excess skin and fatty tissue will be removed. The remaining breast tissue will be reshaped into more proportionate contours to suit your body structure. The areola size may also be reduced to maintain correct proportions with your new breasts.

Breast reduction can be achieved using one of several available techniques.

Some surgical techniques require multiple incisions.

However, like other breast procedures, Dr. Antolín, as a breast reduction specialist, will conceal the incisions around the areola and within the curve along the underside of the breasts as much as possible.

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, lasts approximately 3 hours and requires one day of hospitalisation.

It is the only breast surgery, along with reconstruction, in which we routinely place drains that we remove the following day.

Following discharge, the patient will wear a dressing for 3–4 days, which will be replaced by a specialist bra for one month.

Breast reduction scarring

Breast reduction incisions and scars
Anchor-shaped scar: periareolar around the areola, vertical scar in the lower pole and horizontal scar in the inframammary fold.

Breast reduction results in scars around the areola, a vertical scar in the lower pole and a more or less horizontal scar in the inframammary fold.

The dimensions will depend on the amount of tissue to be removed and the breast shape desired.

A breast reduction should be as demanding in its results as any other aesthetic breast procedure.

Not only must we reduce volume and weight, we must also achieve a beautiful, conical, proportionate breast with optimal positioning on the patient’s chest wall.

The scars are most visible during the first year, then progressively improve to an acceptable appearance.

Postoperative care and recovery

Following discharge, we ask you to rest at home for four days without sudden movements or lifting heavy objects. We will guide you through a gradual return to normal activity, so that you can resume your family and work life within 7 days (although this will also be assessed individually).

Patients are monitored during the first month with weekly appointments for follow-up, wound care, suture removal and progressive information and guidance.

  • We do not recommend any form of massage.
  • You will be able to resume your sporting activities after the first month.
  • Once the first month has elapsed, we will provide guidance on therapeutic options to achieve the best possible scar appearance, although time is our primary ally.

It is one of the most rewarding procedures for patients. Undoubtedly, it is a procedure with clear aesthetic objectives, but it also achieves functional and symptomatic improvements that will benefit you throughout your life.

Results

  • Recovery typically extends over several months.
  • As your breasts gradually settle into their final shape, you may notice a more natural appearance and softer feel.
  • Additionally, the scarring from the incisions will gradually become less noticeable.
  • If you were suffering from upper body pain caused by breast size before surgery, you should already notice marked improvement from the removal of excess glandular tissue.

The results are typically permanent, so that breasts do not enlarge after breast reduction, except in cases of significant weight gain or pregnancy. After breast reduction, the breasts generally do not grow back, except in instances of major weight gain or pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions about reduction mammoplasty

Who is a good candidate?

Any woman in good health who feels that her breasts are excessively large for her body frame is a good candidate for breast reduction.

Where are the incisions made and will there be visible scars?

Incisions are made around the nipple and down the underside of the breast, or around the nipple, down the breast, and under the breast in an anchor-like pattern. There will always be visible scars following surgery, which will gradually fade over time until they become almost imperceptible.

Are the results permanent?

Yes, the results, as with breast augmentation, are permanent unless the patient experiences significant weight gain or becomes pregnant.

Can this procedure correct breast asymmetry?

When associated breast asymmetry is present, we will endeavour to equalise the breasts as much as possible.

What are the risks?

Surgical risks include bleeding, infection, scarring, asymmetry, inability to breastfeed, and some loss of sensation or change in nipple sensation.

Are there different surgical techniques for this procedure?

The type of breast reduction is determined by how the blood supply to the nipple is maintained. In some cases this originates from within the breast, whilst in others it comes from below or above.

How long will it take before I can return to my activities?

Most patients are able to return to normal activities within several days following surgery.

Exercise and sexual activity should be limited for 4 weeks after surgery.

What is the recovery like?

Most patients experience only mild breast discomfort after surgery, and many discontinue pain medication within two days.
Light activity is permitted on the same day as surgery, but weight lifting and strenuous exercise are restricted for at least 4 weeks after the procedure.

What is the appropriate age for the procedure?

Ideally, the patient should not undergo breast reduction until her breasts have finished growing.
However, in some young women, breast size is so large that early reduction may be necessary to alleviate discomfort and self-consciousness.
